In February, my friend Alice successfully completed the 50 KM run challenge for the month. I couldn’t be prouder of her because she finished the challenge during winter and she did have some snow days.
Read about her journey to success here:
What do you like about running?
A: I usually go for a run after I finish work. Being in lockdown, running is my chance to get out of the house, get some fresh air, stretch my legs and get some form of exercise at the same time. Since I started working from home, I feel like my work life and home life has merged into one, and the run definitely helps to separate one from the other and clear my head.
Why did you start running?
A: I actually saw your blog post and Instagram stories on running and loved all the places you were going on your run route. I thought I would give it a go as well. Plus, I wanted to have some sort of discipline and stick to it, as I tend to get bored quite easily!
Did you think you could reach your monthly goal of 50km? How do you feel now?
A: At first, I thought 50km was too much for someone who doesn’t run. It would mean doing a 4km thrice a week! I used to run 2-3km at a time and even at such short distances I used to get out of breath and get stitches. Doing this challenge has definitely upped my endurance to run for longer, and there is still so much more room for improvement. My current goal is to do 5k under 35 minutes.
What motivated you to reach your goal?
A: Honestly, I think it was the Nike Running Club app I used to set up the challenge. It breaks down your run and gives you stat on your pace, your timings, and your route details. You can see your improvement over time and track your progress. It’s like you’re competing against yourselves!
And all the places you end up in make it worthwhile getting out of the house, like this serene sunset over the park!
What do you suggest for runners who want to reach their monthly goal?
A: Keep at it! You will get days when you don’t even feel like changing into your running clothes but as soon as you step out your door, you’ll be glad you did. And get yourself some cute running outfits, they make you wanna go for a run! And have a fire Spotify playlist ready to go or a podcast whatever makes you move!
